The Battle of Winceby, 1643

The Lincolnshire hamlet of Winceby near Spilsby is the scene of a Civil War battlefield where Oliver Cromwell’s career nearly came to a premature end. Cromwell commanded a regiment of cavalry during the battle and narrowly escaped capture when his horse was shot from under him. Even so, the Roundheads were victorious and many of the fleeing Royalists were trapped against a hedge and viciously cut down in an area that is still called Slash Hollow today.
