Cracker Day 1st December 2018

The RBL ( Spilsby and District Branch ) held its annual Cracker Day event at the Franklin Hall in aid of the Poppy Appeal. Two stalls were used selling Bric-a-bac and a tombola. A total of £192.40p was raised for the Poppy Appeal.

Lydia Scutt aged 6 years from Spilsby won the ‘Guess the name of the teddy bear’ competition, by correctly giving the name ‘Princess’ to the teddy bear. She was later presented with the teddy bear in the presence of her mother, Katherine.

An excellent day all round. On behalf of the Royal British Legion ( Spilsby and District Branch ) I would like to give a big ‘thank you’ to all the people who kindly donated monies to this event.

November 2018

The Branch held its November 2018 meeting at the Nelson Butt, Spilsby on the 21st of the month.

The Chairman, Mr. D. Chandler opened the meeting and welcomed members and guests.

The President then recited The Act of Homage.

Apologies were taken and the minutes were read and accepted.

The various committees then gave their reports.

There are currently 64 members of the Royal British Legion (Spilsby and District Branch).

A photograph of Charles Edward Woodward, who was killed in the First World War, will be displayed above his ‘Dead Man’s Penny’ in the Franklin Hall, Spilsby.

The Chairman stated that the Remembrance Parade had been the largest attended ever and was pleased to see so many young people in attendance.

A total of 18 members attended the ‘Battle’s Over’ event at the Franklin Hall, later on Remembrance Sunday.

An update on the Poppy Appeal was then given and the Poppy Appeal Organiser, Mr. M. Lenton, stated he does not have the final figure as yet, but it will surpass the previous years’ total, which had in itself been a record year. Mr. Lenton went on to thank all who had participated in the Poppy Appeal.

The Xmas lunch has been booked for 14th December at the Nelson Butt, Spilsby and there are currently 24 members who are attending.

Arrangements are being finalised for Cracker Day at the Franklin Hall on Saturday 1st December 2018.

There being no other business, the meeting was closed at 2045 hours.

The next Branch meeting will be held at the Nelson Butt on Wednesday 16th January 2019.

October 2018

The Branch held its October 2018 meeting at the Nelson Butt, Spilsby on the 17th of the month.

The Chairman, Mr. D. Chandler opened the meeting and welcomed members and guests.

The President then recited The Act of Homage.

Apologies were taken and the minutes were read and accepted.

The various committees then gave their reports.

There are currently 62 members of the Royal British Legion (Spilsby and District Branch).

An update on the “Dead Man’s Penny“ belonging to Charles Edward Woodward, who served and was killed in the Great War of 1914-1918 was then given. Mr. Woodward ‘hailed’ from Halton Holgate. A presentation date of October 20th 2018 has been arranged for the attendance of David Morris MP and Victoria Atkins MP.

Reference was also made to the Town Council’s ‘ Battles Over-Remembrance Sunday ‘ which will take place at the Franklin Hall on Sunday 11th November 2018, commencing 4pm. Refreshments will be provided by the Town Council. The lighting of a Beacon, will take place at 7pm later that evening on Shamfields Road/Toc-H.

The sum of £295 was raised for the Poppy Appeal as a result of a raffle held at the Centenary Ball in September.

A further discussion then took place regarding the launch of the Poppy Appeal 2018, which starts on 27th October through to the 11th November 2018.

The Remembrance Parade was then discussed. There will be a service rehearsal at the St. James Church at 6pm on Friday 9th November 2018.
The Parade will muster at 10.15am on Sunday 11th November at the Buttercross car park, Spilsby, ready for ‘march off’ at 10.30am.
The Parade will march along Market Street/Church Street.
The Service will commence approx. 10.50am.
After the Service, wreaths will be laid at the War Memorial.
The Parade will then ‘march back’ down Church Street/Market Street where they will be addressed by the Mayor of Spilsby before final dismissal.

The Xmas lunch has been booked for 14th December at the Nelson Butt, Spilsby.

September 2018 - Celebration 100 years since the end of the Great War

A Musical Celebration

There were around 130 people present, who were well entertained by three different singing acts on the night. Almost £300 was raised for the Poppy Appeal and thanks go to all the Business owners in Spilsby who generously donated the prizes.

A thank you also to the Duke of Wellington who supplied the bar and the Bijou Restaurant for supplying the food.

A good night all round.


August 2018

There are currently 63 members of the Royal British Legion (Spilsby and District Branch).

An update was given on the Centenary Ball. Various singers have been ‘booked’ for the night and everything is on track. Posters have been printed and have been distributed throughout the local area. 88 tickets have so far been sold.

An update on the “Dead Man’s Penny“ belonging to Charles Edward Woodward, who served and was killed in the Great War of 1914-1918 was then given. Mr. Woodward ‘hailed’ from Halton Holgate. A preliminary presentation date of October 19th 2018 has been pencilled in, for the attendance of David Morris MP and Victoria Atkins MP.

A further discussion then took place regarding the forthcoming Poppy Appeal, which starts on Saturday 27th October 2018 until Sunday 11th November 2018.

There being no other business, the meeting was closed at 1959 hours.

An update was given on the Centenary Ball. Various singers have been ‘booked’ for the night and everything is on track. Posters have been printed and have been distributed throughout the local area.

The Chairman gave a review regarding the Royal British Legion parade at the Spilsby Show, which took place on Sunday 8th July 2018. There was a good show of Standards and the Parade was excellent.

The Chairman then discussed the forthcoming Remembrance Parade on November 11th 2018. There has been liaison with the Town Council as to funding for the Road Traffic Management as the laws have been changed. After much discussion, the Town Council agreed to pay for the Traffic Management and in future years, for this cost to be met from the precept.

A further discussion then took place regarding a “ Dead Man’s Penny “ belonging to Charles Edward Woodward, who served and was killed in the Great War of 1914-1918. Mr. Woodward ‘hailed’ from Halton Holgate. This memorial plaque is currently in the possession of David Morris MP. It is hoped that David Morris MP and Victoria Atkins MP will be able to arrange a date for said memorial plaque to be presented to the Chairman, Denis Chandler, at a commemoration at the Franklin Hall, where it can be on permanent display, alongside an original Ceramic Poppy, kindly donated by Chairman, Denis Chandler. Enquiries into this are continuing.

A discussion then took place regarding the forthcoming Poppy Appeal, which starts on Saturday 27th October 2018 until Sunday 11th November 2018.

There being no other business, the meeting was closed at 2050 hours.

February 2018

The Branch held its February 2018 meeting at the Nelson Butt, Spilsby on the 21st of the month.

The Chairman, Mr. D. Chandler opened the meeting and welcomed members and guests.

In the absence of the President Mr. R. Worth, the Chairman then recited The Act of Homage.

Apologies were taken and the minutes were read and accepted.

The Mayor of Spilsby, Cllr. Mark Gale and the Town Clerk, Mrs. Yvonne Smith, were present at the meeting. Discussions took place in relation to holding a Centenary event to commemorate the end of the First World War. It was decided to hold a celebration event at the Franklin Hall, Spilsby on 11th November 2018. A ‘Beacon’ would also be ignited at 7pm on the same day.
Further discussions took place and it was decided to hold an additional celebratory event in Spilsby on Saturday 1st September 2018. Type of celebration to be discussed at a later stage.

The various committees then gave their reports.

There are currently 59 members of the Royal British Legion ( Spilsby and District Branch ).

The Social Secretary outlined details for holding a St. George’s Day celebration on Friday 20th April 2018.

The next Branch meeting will be held at the Nelson Butt on Wednesday 21st March 2018.

There being no further Business, the Chairman thanked all in attendance and closed the meeting at 20.55 hours.

November 2017

In November 2017, the King Edward V1 Academy Spilsby, held a concert entitled ‘Lest we forget’. This concert was in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, for the Spilsby and District Branch. All proceeds raised on the night were donated to the Poppy Appeal. The sum in question was £258.60. A fantastic sum.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING  held at the Nelson Butt on Wednesday 15th November 2017.

The Chairman opened the meeting and thanked everyone for their support throughout the previous year.
The Election of Officers was then conducted with all relevant positions taken up.
The newly-elected Chairman, Denis Chandler, then thanked those members who had been  appointed Officers.
As there was no other business the meeting was closed at 20.00 hours.

Armistice Day in Spilsby 2017


The Branch held its October 2017 meeting at the Nelson Butt, Spilsby on the 18th of the month.

The Chairman, Mr. D. Chandler opened the meeting and welcomed members.

In the absence of The President Mr. R. Worth, The Chairman recited The Act of Homage.

Apologies were taken and the minutes were read and accepted.

The various committees then gave their reports, which included an update from the Branch Secretary, Mrs A Lenton on the success of the ‘Night to Remember’ function which was held on the 14th of October at the Franklin Hall.

There are currently 59 members of the Royal British Legion ( Spilsby and District Branch ).

Mr M Lenton gave an update on the current rota system for the shop outlets in Spilsby for the ‘Poppy Appeal’ which starts on 28th October 2017.

Further discussions also took place regarding the forthcoming Remembrance Homage at 11.00am on Saturday 11th November 2017 at the Sir John Franklin Statue, High Street, Spilsby. Assembly is at 10.45am for said Homage.

In addition, arrangements were made for the Remembrance Parade on Sunday 12th November 2017. Assembly is at 10.15am on said day at The Buttercross car park, Market Street, Spilsby. The Parade will commence at 10.30am and march to the St. James Church, Church Street, Spilsby.

A service at said church will follow.

After the service, the parade will assemble and return march to the forecourt of the petrol station, opposite The Terrace, Spilsby, where the Mayor of Spilsby will address the parade.

Votes were then taken for the appointment of the position of County Vice Chairman.

There being no other business the Chairman closed the meeting at 21.17hrs.

The next meeting will be held at the Nelson Butt, Spilsby, on Wednesday 15th November 2017, commencing 19.30hrs.

The A.G.M. will start at 19.30hrs. followed by the ordinary meeting.

Further discussions also took place regarding the memorial service at Sibsey on 1st October, an update on the G90 memorial at Ypres in August 2018 and the planting of 25,000 trees at Glebe Farm to commemorate the ending of World War 1.

There being no other business the Chairman closed the meeting at 20.36hrs.

It was reported that the final sum donated by the public from the Spilsby and District Branch of the Royal British Legion for the Poppy Appeal 2016/17 was £12,379.27p.

Mr N Petit gave members an update on the ‘Night to Remember’ ball being held at the Franklin Hall, Spilsby on Saturday 14th October 2017.

Mr M Lenton requested volunteers for the Poppy Appeal 2017/18, which will commence on Saturday 28th October 2017. A rota system was discussed for the various shop outlets.

Discussions also took place regarding the centenary of the end of W.W.1 which will take place next year. It is hoped an event can be arranged to take place in Spilsby during 2018.

There being no other business the Chairman closed the meeting at 20.50hrs.

It was reported the sum of £138.22p was raised at the recently held Extravaganza at the King Edward V1 Academy, Spilsby

An update on the Recruitment event to take place at the Franklin Hall on Saturday 14th October 2017 was given by fellow member, Nick Pettit.

There was a general discussion relating to Pilgrimages to the World War 1 battlefields next year ( Centenary of the end of World War 1 ).

In addition, a further discussion took place regarding plans to commemorate the end of World War 1, with a local event in Spilsby.

There being no other business the Chairman closed the meeting at 20.47hrs.

Branch members will attend an ‘Extravaganza’ event at the local Kind Edward V1 Academy, Spilsby on Friday 30th June 2017, where a recruitment drive will be on display.

The Social Secretary reminded members of the forthcoming St. George’s Day celebration dinner, to be held at the Masonic Hall, Spilsby on Saturday 22nd April 2017.
Members were also reminded of a forthcoming coach trip to the National Arboretum
on the 29th May 2017.

As a result of the on-going recruitment drive for additional members, a sub-committee was formed to discuss ways of implementing this process.

There being no other business, the Chairman closed the meeting at 8.22pm.

Due to refurbishment at the Nelson Butt, the next meeting will be held at the George Hotel, Market Street Spilsby.

I have the pleasure of informing you that the Spilsby and District Poppy Appeal 2016, has recorded its highest figure EVER of £11,803.83 ( and still counting ). This reflects not only the generosity of the public,  but also the hard work by ALL the Collectors.
