| Lincolnshire Police working in Partnership
with Education Authority
Lincolnshire Police are currently working on a number of projects in the Spilsby, Wainfleet and District in consultation with and in partnership with the local schools. The projects are aimed at citizenship, safety and crime reduction. Here is a brief overview of those projects. The Fountain Project Children throughout the area have been and appraised their environment
creating a pictorial record of the elements they do not like and those
they do. As a consequence of the Fountain Project it was decided to put right the affected areas, and youth organisations turned out to assist. This is to be repeated throughout the year. The Fire service became one of the main partners when they attended with appliances and helped throughout. An organisation called the Friends of Spilsby was formed with a plan that about twenty five persons per quarter turn out to clean the town. The school encourages this practice. An education project aimed at 5 to 9yr olds in the Spilsby area teaching the old codes of conduct, pride, courtesy and respect. The course teaches nutrition, health, safety, courtesy. There are twelve persons per course and it is based on the knights of the Round Table. Those successful in passing the course pass out at Tattershall Castle. The first course has been held and the second is due to start on the 27th January 2004. The funding for this project came from the BCU and Lincolnshire Rural Housing. Early indications are that the course has helped to achieve significant behavioural change. The course is massively over subscribed. The primary schools identify the children most in need of such education. An education project aimed at 2to 5yr olds. Badger Bill goes into school and with an instructor plays a game matching good and bad behaviours. The project is basic in nature with simple poor behaviour traits examined. Road Safety The issue of bike wise and road safety is addressed through participating schools. The Weekly Pursuit Once a crime is committed, the weekly pursuit is created. The school will display a copy and there is a mechanism for intelligence information from the school to be returned to the originating officer. The school is a valuable source of information. The same is applicable to the youth groups. This operation deals with truancy, the police, chamber of commerce, public and school all work together to report children seen in school hours in the town centre. The Galahad Project Youth seminars held to establish exactly what the young people want and an opportunity for the police to present their perspective on disorder and the effect it is having on the community. One such seminar has been held at Spilsby. The Gauntlet A project designed to narrow the gap between the young and old. Either side can pick up the gauntlet and challenge the other. There is to be a cookery competition this month between a team of fourteen year olds and over 60s in the youth centre. The school will provide nominated teams to take part in the activities such as debating, darts, pool, bowls, quiz etc. Youth Initiative A youth initiative has started with a grant from the local council. Their
aims are to help the community, they have gritted footpaths, removed leaves,
cleaned play areas and address the school on crime and community related
issues. |
