What a lovely town and super website!
We visited Spilsby in May this year and loved it instantly. It seems like a lively and vibrant place. We are looking to moving to Lincolnshire fairly soon and would love to be in or near the town. We would like to purchase a plot of land (at least 1/4 acre) in order to self- build our retirement home.......not a 'grand design' just a comfortable home with a big garden for vegetable growing. Does anyone know of any land for sale with planning permission?

As an old Spilsbian, I was having a regular read of the website and found (again) the pages about the islands off South Australia (the Joseph Banks group). So I decided to find out more about Spilsby Island, and found a very interesting website - apparently it is the only island in the group that is not a nature reserve, and you can buy an allotment (a 1/41 st share). The Picker Family Bible has been handed over to a family member and the Worsdale sampler query has been solved by John Platt. John has written a fascinating book about Withern. A P.C. Worsdale is mentioned in the 1881 Census living in a house next to the Methodist Chapel. Thank you Webmaster for publishing these two queries.

Re: Janet Gordon's enquiry about Worsdale - Police Constable Worsdale was the first resident policeman in Withern c1880. He is mentioned in a new book - 'Withern, the story of a Lincolnshire parish' - just published by Louth Museum [ISBN 0 9539533 3 5]. Among names in the book, such as farmers and traders, are the school pupils in 1871.

Sampler & Bible... Sewn by Elizabeth Ann Worsdale aged 11 years whilst a pupil at Withern National School near Alford in 1881.

Also Edward & Mary Picker, married 20th June 1837. Named in family bible.

I am writing from Singapore. I am currently researching the history of surveys and mapping in Singapore.
Reportedly, in 1822, the brother of Sir John Franklin, Captain James Franklin of the Bengal Army, conducted a survey around the island of ingapore. In maps published in the 1820's, the part of Singapore now known as 'Changi' was also labelled 'Franklin Point'. Presumably this must have been named after Captain James Franklin.
May I know if you have links to any sources with more information on Captain James Franklin? This is perhaps one of the those links between Lincolnshire and the Malayan area which has since been forgotten.

Dear Sir, Do you have any information about The Rev Thomas Walker Sale who died 20th Sept 1873 at Spilsby. I believe he was the vicar there and was married to Lydia Rawlinson Walker. Do you know anything about the family? Or about his as vicar? I am busy researching the Walker family who were very rich and lived in Arnos Grove ,Southgate Middx. Lydia was one of the ten children of John Walker who died in 1824. If you do have information or local history books on the area and the parish or church I should be very pleased to hear from you.
