The Spilsby May Day Festival took place in the centre of Spilsby on Sunday 1st May 2011. The event was organised by the Spilsby Business Partnership and is now an annual event. The High Street was closed to traffic from 7am that Sunday morning. Twenty four stalls were then erected on the High Street selling a variety of local produce and artefacs. A children’s play area was erected on the Buttercross car park, which included merry go round, bouncy castle, face painting and much more. The centre car park had a stage (articulated trailer) kindly donated by Craven Transport for the day. This was used for a number of different acts throughout the day, singers/groups all entertained the crowd. First to perform was folk singer, Katie Abbott. Bruce and Jane from the Theatre kept the children busy with a variety of singing and dancing classes which led to the majority of the audience then participating. Many local shops were open for the day, the majority doing a brisk trade. The event was started with a service conducted by Father Peter Coates which featured a Storyteller, telling a story called “The King’s Golden Statue.” Spilsby Mayor, Councillor David Pleming, was also in attendance together with the Mayoress, Carol Pleming. A competition for the best drawing of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, featuring the local primary schools, had been judged by local artist, Michael Webster and the prizes were distributed to the category winners, by the Mayor of Spilsby and the Chairman of the Spilsby Business Partnership, Angela Morgan-Knight. The crowds were further entertained by local group, Noisy Tuesday, who had all the crowd dancing and singing until the end. The festival concluded around 4.30pm that day and was adjudged to be a great success. After the stalls were taken down and everything cleared away the participating members of the Spilsby Business Partnership took refuge in the White Hart Coaching Inn where they ate a well-earned meal. The day was described as a great success, for all who took part AND for the Spilsby public in general. Michael Lenton (May 2011)
